Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also known as the “Blue Mansion,” is an iconic heritage landmark in George Town, Penang, celebrated for its cultural and historical significance. Built in the late 19th century by Cheong Fatt Tze, a prominent Chinese merchant and philanthropist, the mansion exemplifies traditional Chinese courtyard house architecture with influences from European design, including stained glass windows and cast-iron elements from Scotland. Its distinctive indigo-blue facade and meticulous Feng Shui alignment reflect the opulence and cultural identity of the Straits Chinese elite during the colonial era.
By the late 20th century, the mansion fell into disrepair but was rescued through extensive restoration efforts in the 1990s. These efforts, recognised by UNESCO and other heritage organisations, transformed it into a boutique hotel and museum. Today, the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion serves as a symbol of Penang’s rich multicultural history and commitment to heritage conservation, attracting visitors worldwide and preserving the legacy of the Peranakan community.
