Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve
MAN AND BIOSPHERE (MAB) PROGRAMME
Tasik Chini, the second largest natural freshwater lake in Malaysia, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognized in 2009 under the Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme. As the first lake in the country to receive this prestigious designation, it is listed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve
Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve (TCBR), Malaysia’s second-largest natural freshwater lake, holds the distinction of being the country’s first UNESCO-recognized site under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Since 2009, it has been proudly listed as part of the prestigious World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
Spanning an impressive 6,922.97 hectares, TCBR encompasses a harmonious blend of rivers, streams, gently sloping hills, and the Tasik Chini State Park Reserve Forest. This diverse ecosystem is perfectly suited to fulfill the core objectives of conservation, sustainable development, and logistical support. Notably, the barraging of Sungai Chini, the lake’s sole outlet, ensures that Tasik Chini remains flooded year-round, even during the dry season, fostering its appeal as a premier ecotourism destination.
TCBR is not just a treasure trove of biodiversity but also a cultural hub. Indigenous communities, particularly the Jakun tribe, reside in the area and rely on the lake for their livelihood and water supply. These communities actively participate in plantation development through FELDA and contribute to the growing ecotourism industry, ensuring a balance between preserving nature and supporting sustainable development.
Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve stands as a shining example of Malaysia’s commitment to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth—a legacy that continues to inspire awe and action.
