Christ Church
Christ Church in Melaka is one of the most iconic and significant landmarks in the city, deeply rooted in both its religious and cultural history. Built in 1753 by the Dutch, this Anglican church is the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia and one of the most well-preserved symbols of the Dutch colonial era. The church was constructed during Dutch rule in Melaka, following the capture of the city from the Portuguese, and was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Its distinctive red brick structure, with its simple yet elegant design, has become a hallmark of Melaka’s colonial architecture, earning it a prominent place in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
As a place of worship, Christ Church has played an integral role in the religious and cultural life of Melaka for centuries. It was the focal point for the Protestant Christian community in the region and remains an active church today, attracting worshippers and visitors alike. The church also contributed to the establishment of the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia and continues to be a symbol of religious heritage in the city.
In modern-day Melaka, Christ Church remains a testament to the city’s rich colonial past and its ongoing multicultural legacy. The church is a key feature of the Dutch Square, surrounded by other historic buildings like the Stadthuys and Victoria Fountain, forming an area that is both a popular tourist attraction and an enduring symbol of Melaka’s religious and cultural diversity. Christ Church continues to shape the cultural heritage of Melaka, reflecting the historical influences of European colonization while also serving as a center for faith and community in the present day.
