Gua Gunung Runtuh
The Gunung Runtuh Cave Geoarchaeological Site is located just 72 meters below the summit of Gajah’s Head Limestone Hill. This star-shaped cave, covering an area of approximately 96 m², has served as a vital habitat for prehistoric humans between 14,000 and 2,000 years ago. It was used by cultures spanning the Paleolithic, Epi-Paleolithic, and Neolithic periods, offering a glimpse into early human life in Southeast Asia.
One of the most significant features of the cave is its role as the burial site of the Perak Man, a man believed to have been around 40 years old when he died approximately 10,000 years ago. The burial of the Perak Man in the cave’s central area highlights the site’s cultural and ritual importance to the prehistoric community. This discovery is of immense archaeological value, providing important insights into the social, cultural, and spiritual practices of early humans in the region.
As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, the Gunung Runtuh Cave is not only a critical site for scientific research but also an invaluable resource for public education and cultural preservation. The cave’s rich archaeological heritage, combined with its dramatic limestone surroundings, makes it a perfect destination for visitors interested in both geology and prehistory.
