The Kapitan Keling Mosque, located in George Town, Penang, is a historic mosque that reflects the island’s rich multicultural heritage. Built in 1801 by the Indian Muslim community, it was named after the “Kapitan Keling,” a title for the leader of the Tamil Muslim merchants who played a significant role in Penang’s early trade and settlement. The mosque’s architecture blends Mughal, Moorish, and colonial styles, featuring grand domes, minarets, and arched colonnades, symbolising the cultural diversity of its creators.

During colonial times, the mosque served as a religious and social centre for the Muslim community, fostering unity and providing a place for worship and gatherings. Today, it remains an active mosque and a prominent landmark in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town. It is also a centre for interfaith dialogue, cultural exploration, and religious education, attracting both worshippers and visitors, underscoring its enduring historical and spiritual significance.
