Penang Forestry Museum

Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve

The Penang Forestry Museum (Muzium Perhutanan Pulau Pinang), established in 1976 and opened to the public in 1983, is dedicated to fostering a greater appreciation of Penang’s rich rainforest heritage. Spanning 700 square meters, the museum is uniquely constructed using various types of wood, with the main exhibition hall supported by the trunk of a single forest tree—symbolizing the island’s deep connection to its natural environment.

The museum’s exhibits focus on the diversity of Penang’s forests and the significance of wood and forest products. One of its key features is eight dioramas, each representing different forest types found in Penang, including mangrove swamp forest, coastal hill forest, lowland dipterocarp forest, and montane oak forest, among others. These dioramas provide visitors with a vivid, educational overview of the island’s various ecosystems and the flora and fauna they support.

Although primarily aimed at educating children and school students about the importance of conservation, the museum also attracts a steady flow of tourists, especially given its proximity to the Batu Ferringhi tourist belt. The Penang Forestry Museum plays a vital role in environmental education, raising awareness about sustainable forest management and the need to protect Penang’s diverse natural landscapes.
